A Pair of Cuba-bound Aid Vessels Declared Unaccounted For subsequent to Setting Sail from Mexico.
A large-scale search and rescue mission is currently under way in the Caribbean Sea for two lost sailing vessels loaded with aid cargo en route from the Mexican coast to Cuba.
Maritime Search Efforts Deployed
Mexico has sent navy personnel and military search aircraft to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were had on board at least nine crew members, as stated by a navy statement.
The vessels had been scheduled to reach the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their docking, the navy said.
Context of Humanitarian Support to the Island
Cuba has relied heavily on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over recent weeks, as the nation grapples with repeated national electricity failures.
"The crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and each boat are fitted with suitable navigational gear and emergency beacons," an official involved in the effort commented.
The nine crew members are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has established contact with coast guard agencies from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.
"We are working closely with the officials and continue to be hopeful in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the statement continued.
Earlier Aid Shipment
Just days before, the government in Havana warmly welcomed and officially received a separate vessel that had carried 14 tonnes of donated goods to the island.
That vessel, dubbed "a modern Granma" after the yacht in which the revolutionary leader landed in Cuba to launch the revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar panels, drugs, formula milk, bikes and provisions.
Larger International Context
Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led attempts to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba since January, when a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation began.
Global bodies have since highlighted ""severe" supply shortages, with in excess of 50k surgeries cancelled in Cuba amid energy rationing.
Diplomatic tensions have been ramped up in recent months, with statements from various officials highlighting the delicate state of bilateral relations.
In response to recent proposals, a senior government figure stated firmly that "the political system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Indications suggest that preliminary steps of discussions were initiated, although their current progress remains uncertain.
The Mexican navy said it was committed to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to find the sailboats and guarantee the well-being of the sailors.
As of now, there has been no official comment on the lost ships by the government in Havana.
