An informant has revealed an official investigation that the UK abandoned confidential technology allowing Afghanistan's rulers to identify local individuals who collaborated with allied troops.

Information Leak Puts Numerous in Danger

The source, known as Person A, stated that people concerned by the information breach were advised to change residences and switch their contact details to avoid detection from the ruling authorities.

Lawmakers are currently examining the Conservative government's handling of a massive breach of private information concerning approximately 19k Afghans who had asked to relocate to the UK to flee the regime.

How the Leak Happened

A spreadsheet including confidential details, including names, contact details and occasionally household data, was inadvertently disclosed by a staff member employed at special operations center in early 2022.

The breach came to light months later, when details of multiple applicants who had requested to move to the UK appeared on social media.

Taliban Capabilities

“There seems to be a false assumption that militant forces do not have the same sort of facilities that we have,” the whistleblower testified to MPs.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they possess it. Once they acquire mobile details, they can trace your exact position. That is what specialized teams did.”

When questioned about regarding if authorities possessed advanced decryption, Person A declared: “They have complete capability.”

Aftermath of the Security Lapse

Early investigations provided to the investigation indicated that at least 49 relatives and colleagues of Afghans affected by the breach had been executed.

A superinjunction regarding the breach was put in force in August 2023 and restricted all details about it from being made public until mid-2025.

Protective Actions

Due to legal constraints, Person A and the aid group she was working with informed individuals at risk they were working with that they had “concerns that certain devices had been intercepted”.

“We recommended that they moved when possible and changed their mobile numbers. That constituted the two main details that, if authorities obtained these details, would result in their location being found,” Person A explained.

Disputed Conclusions

The source argued that government assessment conducted by a former official had been wrong to conclude that the acquisition of the information by the regime was “unlikely to substantially change an individual's existing exposure”.

“The crucial point is that these individuals are in hiding from the authorities; they are in hiding. All concerns relate to former occupations.”

Person A described disturbing violence endured by affected individuals, comprising electric shock torture, waterboarding, and violent assaults.

“We have had four-year-old children who have had bones crushed to pressure households to say where someone is,” Person A stated.
