British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential style architect behind a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
Price's death comes just weeks after he debuted his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including various looks for her US tour following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
