Numerous in Cameroon express anger over the fact that the president has secured an eighth consecutive term

The nation's Minister of the Interior Paul Atanga Nji has declared that political opponent Issa Tchiroma Bakary will undergo legal proceedings over allegations that he incited "violent electoral rallies".

At least 4 protesters have been lost their lives during clashes between security forces and protesters since the electoral process on October 12, with the 92-year-old head of state winning an eighth consecutive term.

The opposition leader asserts that he was the true winner, a assertion rejected by Biya's ruling party, the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM).

Aggressive responses by police and security officers on protesters have concerned the global community, with the United Nations, AU and EU calling for moderation.

Official's Claims

Recently, the interior minister alleged Tchiroma Bakary of organising what he described as "illegal" demonstrations resulting in the deaths, and also rebuked him for claiming win in the presidential race.

He noted that Tchiroma Bakary's "associates behind an rebellious scheme" will also undergo judicial processes.

Election Results

Paul Biya, who took control in the early 80s and is now the world's oldest head of state, obtained the 12 October election with over half of the votes, compared to just over a third for his opponent, according to the electoral authority.

Opposition Response

The opposition figure is has not yet commented to the official announcement to try him, but he had before declared that he rejected a stolen vote - and that he was not afraid of being arrested.

When results were announced, he said that security forces opened fire on protesters gathered near his residence in the city of Garoua, killing at least 2 individuals.

Inquiry Announced

Recently, the interior minister disclosed that an investigation would be launched into unrest prior to and following the publication of the poll figures.

"During these attacks, some of the perpetrators died," he stated, without offering a precise figure of demonstrators who have been killed in the confrontations.

The minister noted that multiple officers of the police and military also suffered serious injuries.

Ongoing Circumstances

Although Nji maintained the condition across the country was now stable, protesters continue to protest in some parts of the country, especially in these two cities, where demonstrators set up obstructions on that day, and set fire to tires on the thoroughfares.

Experts caution that the election-related unrest could push the country into a leadership vacuum.
