Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of entry passages leading to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - imposed militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over the holidays. This mission, to take out militants who endanger our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
