New research reveals that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these drugs must be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors propose the way of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like something activating and you become ravenous," said a patient.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural management.
