Information Available About the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 people lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when gunmen fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local police are describing as a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the death toll is 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were transported to hospital.

The victims have not yet been formally identified, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She told the events before the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
