International Committee of the Red Cross Accompanies Militant Group in Recovery for Remains of Israeli Hostages in Gaza

A Red Cross official stated that its personnel joined members of Hamas into zones of Gaza still under Israeli military control to support the hunt for the bodies of individuals held captive.

Truce Terms and Captive Bodies Handover

Under the truce negotiated by the United States, which began on 10 October, the group is required to hand over the bodies of all Israeli hostages as soon as possible. As a reciprocal measure, the Israeli government has agreed to transfer 15 Palestinian bodies for each Israeli.

The organization has so far handed back the bodies of 15 of those taken hostage but zero in the past five days, as a portion of those bodies are thought to be in locations past the yellow line marking the temporary truce line.

Red Cross Involvement as Impartial Facilitator

“Upon the appeal of the parties, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) accompanied a participant in the hostilities as the party searched for the remains of the deceased beyond the military-established ‘yellow line’,” said a spokesperson for the committee.

She continued: “The parties to the conflict established the procedures of the mission and delegated the Red Cross to act as a impartial mediator. We was not involved in those negotiations.”

She further explained: “The ICRC was not involved in the physical hunt for the bodies nor does it engage in the physical recovery of human remains.”

US Demand and Regional Recovery Operations

Recently, the US president delivered a 48-hour ultimatum to the organization. “Hamas is going to have to begin handing over the bodies of the deceased hostages, which include two Americans, promptly, or the other countries participating in this significant truce will intervene,” he posted on his social‑media platform.

As the two-day window neared, Hamas, joined by the Red Cross, joined Egyptian teams, who were authorised by Israeli authorities to look for bodies beyond the boundary marking the Israeli military’s pullback inside Gaza. An official representative said the Egyptian team would use excavator machines and vehicles in the search.

Official Verification and Media Coverage

This development was corroborated by an unnamed Israeli official, who told local press that Hamas representatives had been allowed to access areas of the region under military authority to search for the bodies of hostages, together with Egypt’s and Red Cross teams.

“To achieve this goal, Hamas members were permitted to cross the designated boundary,” the source was quoted as saying.

Video released by a regional network appeared to show individuals of a specialized group – belonging to the organization’s armed faction responsible for holding hostages – escorting a humanitarian transport in a specific location close to a southern city, which is beyond Israeli military control.

Difficulties in Finding Captive Bodies

Efforts to locate for the remains of Israeli hostages has become one of the most sensitive matters in the ceasefire agreed between the two sides. However, the effort to locate the bodies has been challenging from the outset, given the presence of an approximate enormous amount of debris across the strip, where, as per health officials, at least ten thousand residents are recorded as unaccounted for, buried under the debris.

Diverging Statements on Remains Location

Hamas has stated it does not know the exact whereabouts of all the bodies, saying it has lost contact with several of its teams that had been holding the captives and were reportedly killed during military strikes.

However, an Israeli government spokesperson asserted that Hamas was aware of the whereabouts of the remains. “Should the group made more of an effort, they would be able to retrieve the bodies of our hostages,” the official said.

American Position and Weapons Surrender Discussions

While the American leader has acknowledged that a portion of the bodies are hard to reach, he said that “others they can hand over now and, for some reason, they are not.”

“It may have to do with the surrender of weapons of Hamas,” he noted.

The US administration has said it has received assurances from the organization that the faction will disarm, though no specific schedule has been established. They remains reluctant to give up its arms without firm assurances about the fate of its fighters.
