Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her deal, is known as a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a major signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated since she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a major boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be building momentum.
Their recent performances feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen further activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official stated: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
