New Year's Partygoers Urged to Dress Warmly with Snowfall Forecast Throughout the UK
Forecasters are reporting an icy commencement to the new year, with snowfall expected throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants have been told to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Hogmanay Celebrations Proceed In Spite of Alerts
The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are set to go ahead, unlike last year's cancellation. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve night for those partying, so extra layers will be essential," said the national forecaster.
Displays Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. The mercury are expected to be cold, meaning additional clothing vital, as per forecasters.
To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Broad Advisories for Friday
Moving into Friday, weather warnings are in place for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

- People are advised to leave additional time for trips on the road.
- Delays and cancellations are likely on trains and buses.
The Mercury Expected to Drop Even More
As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to drop further as snowfall and high winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.
Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Public Health Alerts Issued
In addition, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Officials stated this meant the weather was expected to lead to major effects across health and social care services. This includes a expected uptick in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.
The message for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in good health, dressing for the cold is utterly key.
