Slot Insists He Is Secure and Retains Liverpool's Backing After PSV Loss
The Liverpool head coach admitted that it was natural for doubts to be raised about his future after another heavy defeat versus the Dutch champions.
Liverpool endured their ninth loss in 12 matches, marking the team's poorest streak since being relegated in the 1953-54 season.
They were taken apart by the Eredivisie champions on a tough night at their home ground.
“I feel secure, I'm fine, I've received plenty of backing from the top,” the coach commented.
“It's important to reverse this trend and earn three points naturally but when you're working as a coach and underperforming then it is normal that questions are asked.”
He added, “I'm comfortable with my role. This isn't the first time I've found myself in a tough spot but it's necessary that we changed our fortunes.”
Conversations with Club Management
Upon being questioned to provide details on his discussions with the team officials, Slot said:
“We communicate frequently. They are helpful for the squad and for me and we discuss these matters but they aren't calling me every single minute of the day to say they trust me.”
He added, “Through standard conversations we have I perceive the trust. But I've not talked to them since this match yet so we'll see.”
Persistent Problems and Player Reaction
Slot expressed regret over familiar weaknesses from his squad in their Champions League loss, namely poor finishing and conceding too easily.
Meanwhile, player Curtis Jones was more forthright in his assessment of the team's situation.
“I haven't got the solutions. Truthfully, I do not. I’m saying that to all,” the midfielder said.
“It is unacceptable. I don't need to wait to consider it. I’m past being angry internally. I’m at the point currently where I simply lack the phrases.”
He added, “It's tough because I’m playing for the team I support. I'm a supporter, and I’ve seen Liverpool for years.”
“In a long, long time, I haven’t experienced a Reds side experiencing a spell such as this with outcomes so bad.”
He finished, “However we still have the crest on our chest. And until it is gone, we will always compete.”
“We’re going to try to get this team back to where it needs to be, demonstrate to all again what Liverpool stands for and the reason it's called the top club in the planet.”
“But right now, things are bad and we have to turn it around.”
