The beloved police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th season, announced by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode series written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The previous season wrapped up in recent years with a finale that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only came recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to tackle corruption within the police force.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most delicate case to date."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

Yet, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the background, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans track the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together soon."

"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."

Series Legacy

The drama premiered in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Stephen Graham.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the new season will premiere.

The finale of season six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
