The ice cream brand's Founding Partner States Parent Company Halted Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Product
The original creators of the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has stated how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction for a new Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, who established the business with Jerry Greenfield, revealed that he plans to personally create this new flavor within a personal collection highlighting issues the company has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Conflict Between Creators and Parent Company
This latest announcement deepens the continuing tension among the world-famous dessert company with its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods giant that acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
Both founders have asserted how the parent company and its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming a Symbol of Support
Mr. Cohen stated via social media how he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas for the product's name plus potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared in a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol for support for the Palestinian people because of its coloration, which closely resemble the colors in the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Previous Activism and Recent Changes
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, leading to the parent company transferring their Israel business over to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming product line is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist dessert company that originally created several years back for endorsing former political contender Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Management Shifts and Future Plans
Mr. Cohen stated that he plans to create other frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues which the company was prevented from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
This development follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, following decades of involvement, citing worries regarding how the company's autonomy was undermined after Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.
At that time, Mr. Cohen stated how "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to keep working within the organization to advocate for its independence ensuring that it can achieve its ethical purpose, the principles that established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he explained to journalists.
