Israelis have gathered around the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions advanced in Egypt over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The attack led to in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jewish people since the World War II.

Israel reacted by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are considered accurate by the UN and other global organizations.

"The violent adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the leader stated on that day.

He also pledged to "realize all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will not present a risk to Israel".

Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel

The government authorities delayed state remembrance events until October 16th - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still took place across the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the families of people who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was broadcast throughout Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was observed throughout the country.

Ceasefire Talks in Egypt

At the same time, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams met in the Egyptian coastal city of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of mediated discussions to review the provisions of the plan.

A senior representative involved in the negotiations indicated that an late session of negotiations started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The official explained the morning session concluded without concrete outcomes, due to differences over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not restart combat after the opening period of the agreement.

He commented that the talks are "tough and have still not produce any real breakthrough," but noted that facilitators are working hard to close the disparities between the both parties.

Key Points in Talks

  • A lasting halt to fighting
  • The trade of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The removal of troops from Gaza
  • Measures for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • Future administration of the area

Citizen Reaction

In the city's public square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother endured the assault on the outdoor event, where 378 people were killed and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - told: "No place appears as home anymore and until all the hostages come back no one will feel safe."

"Once we see everybody home once more, we can relax anew. Then we can start to rebuild," she concluded.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in Jerusalem, people gathered to express their solidarity for the families of the hostages. Israel states 48 continue in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be living.

Protester Atalia Regev remarked: "We need do any agreement required for the captives to be released. But we truly desire promises that we will be safe."

Research now regularly indicate that about 70% of the population prefer the hostilities to conclude in return for the freedom of the hostages.

Palestinian Conditions

At the area of the gathering, those paying respects assembled to remember the victims.

From there, the sound of military attacks and artillery could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers said the severe Israeli attacks carried on.

In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were documented in the early hours of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, sector and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side district of the community, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.

"Once the evening falls, the anxiety comes with it," relocated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli bombing earlier, described.

"We are afraid of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, embracing, especially my little child who puts his head on me throughout the night."

"Every second we look at the news to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the fighting will resume to us."

Medical Crisis

The medical facility in Gaza City said it had received the corpses of six people by the midday, including a trio killed in an Israeli bombing in the south part area.
