Vince Gilligan Discloses He Knows How Pluribus Will Conclude... For Now.
The creative mastermind did not foresee that Pluribus would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the popular sci-fi show coming to an end—and the next chapter officially in the works—Gilligan and his team reflected on the fan response and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
About the Tremendous Audience Reaction
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and fan theories regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to avoid both.
“It feels like an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by online forums.”
“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.
The Big Question: Will the creator See the Ending of Pluribus?
Given that Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by fan response, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… in a way.
“We've developed some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” he states. “yet we stand ready to abandon a decent plan for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Then again, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”
Then again, why not reference the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
