Volcano Mahameru Eruption in Indonesia Prompts Evacuations

The nation's Mount Semeru, the tallest summit on the island of Java, has exploded, covering multiple communities with volcanic ash, leading to evacuations and leading authorities to raise the alert to the maximum level.

The mountain in the province of East Java unleashed searing clouds of hot ash and a mixture of stone, molten rock, and gases that travelled up to 7km down its slopes multiple times from noon to evening, while a dense plume of hot clouds rose 2km into the air, as stated by Indonesia’s Geology Agency.

The eruptions that unfolded throughout the day forced authorities to raise the mountain's warning status twice, from the level three to the highest, the agency reported. No deaths or injuries have been announced.

More than 300 inhabitants in the three communities most at risk in the district of Lumajang region were relocated to official safe havens, as mentioned by a representative for the national disaster mitigation agency.

He stated that heightened volcanic movements of the mountain on Wednesday afternoon prompted officials to expand the danger zone to 8km from the crater. People were urged to keep away from an area along the Kobokan River, which is the route of the molten rock stream, as scorching gases moved down Semeru’s slopes.

Videos on online platforms showed a dense cloud of volcanic dust moving through a wooded ravine to a waterway beneath a bridge. Locals, some with faces covered with ash and rain, fled to makeshift refuges or left for other safe areas.

Regional news outlets indicated that authorities were struggling to rescue about 178 people stranded on the 12,060-foot peak at the Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post. The party comprised 137 climbers, 15 porters, seven guides and six tourism officials, according to an official with the national park.

“They are currently safe at the Ranu Kumbolo station,” a spokesperson stated in a video statement. He said the post was located 4.5km from the crater on the northern slope of the mountain, which is outside the trajectory of the fiery cloud movement that was observed moving to the southeast direction. Inclement conditions and precipitation required the group to spend the night there, he explained.

The volcano, also known as Mahameru, has erupted numerous times in the last two centuries. However, as is the case with many of the 129 live volcanoes in the archipelago, tens of thousands of people still to reside on its fertile slopes.

Semeru’s previous significant explosion was in late 2021, when 51 people were killed and hundreds more were burned and villages were submerged in thick mud. The eruption forced the evacuation of more than 10,000 residents from their houses.

The country, an island chain of over 280 million inhabitants, sits along the Pacific “ring of fire”, a horseshoe-shaped series of tectonic boundaries, and is prone to seismic events and volcanic activity.
