Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the ability to question certain calls made by the chair umpire, following the system already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
